When the lido was threatened with closure – such was the strength of feeling in the community about the importance of keeping it open that a committee of local residents came together to save it.

Following a successful opening event and reasonable weather over the last month, Woburn Lido has had a good start to the season.

The Lido has been shown tremendous support from the local community & local businesses, none more so than from local former professional footballer & manager, Edwin Stein.

Edwin Stein and his brothers; Brian & Mark have all played for and managed football teams in a professional capacity. Edwin became the first black manager in English football when he was appointed manager for Barnet. Mark played for Stoke & Chelsea and Brian had a distinguished career at Luton Town FC and was the only South African player to play for England.

On the 7th May 2014 the Stein brothers held a “Golf with the Greats” day at Woburn Golf Club in aid of their Foundation. The brothers set up The Stein Foundation in honour of their parents Lillian & Isaiah who were stalwarts of the South African liberation movement. The Thornton Road Primary School, in Cape Town is, the chief beneficiary of the Stein Foundation's project in South Africa.

The event raised a considerable amount of money and Edwin Stein is making an extremely generous donation of £1000 to the Woburn Lido on behalf of The Stein Foundation and it's work in the UK, promoting education through sport.

Christopher Smith, Chairman of the Woburn Swimming Pool Committee, said:

We are truly grateful for this wonderful donation on behalf of Edwin Stein & The Stein Foundation. The Woburn Lido is an integral part of community life in the village and surrounding areas and it’s wonderful that local organizations recognize this and are reaching out to help us keep it open.”
